The Center's Health Insurance Studies Program is a nationally-recognized authority on the current state of local, state and national health insurance policies, coverage, costs and efficacy.  The Center regularly publishes
policy briefs, fact sheets, and journal articles as well as its signature biennial report The State of Health Insurance in California (SHIC), a comprehensive examination of health insurance coverage in the state, with particular attention to health and health care disparities resulting from lack of insurance

Under the leadership of Center Director Ninez Ponce, a “rapid response team” of researchers is currently tracking activity surrounding efforts to “repeal and replace” the ACA. The team’s weekly assessments cover various ACA repeal-related topics, culled from a number of sources. See latest updates.

In addition, the Health Insurance Program provides:

  • Statistical analyses of health insurance topics
  • Expertise and evaluation services of state and national health programs and initiatives
  • Rapid response to data requests from legislators and their staff, as well as partners and advocates, the research community and the media.
Our impact

Publications, presentations, and invited testimony from Center faculty and staff have also supported a wide range of health insurance initiatives, including the county-based Healthy Kids programs, to early “bridge to healthcare reform” efforts, to statewide legislative efforts to expand Medi-Cal and Healthy Families. Our data has informed efforts to increase insurance subsidies for low-income families and extend Medi-Cal coverage to undocumented youth.  Our research has been included in Supreme Court amicus briefs in support of health care reform.  Learn more about our Center milestones
