2023 Steve Wallace Health Policy Fellowship​​

Opportunity for all First-Generation FSPH Graduate Students to Compete for Award of up to $5,000

Two winners will be selected for our inaugural award!

 

This fellowship honors the life work of Dr. Steven Wallace of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. His work focused on many areas of policy to improve the health of everyone living in California. Throughout his career he placed emphasis on supporting the careers of first-generation college students, knowing they bring unique and important perspectives to health policy facing many underrepresented communities. His legacy of support continues through this fellowship competition.

 

The winner will receive an award of up to $5,000 and an opportunity to work on a project within the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. The project will be selected following award and will require no more than 4 hours per week.

 

2021–2022 Prompt
This year’s theme is Preparing for Public Health’s Future. Tell us what being a first-generation student means to you and what public health issue you are most concerned about addressing in your career. The use of “public health issue” is intended to be broad and to encompass issues ranging from chronic disease prevention to access to healthcare systems, social determinants of health to the role of policy and laws in shaping the conditions that promote health and wellness.

 

Accepted Submission Medium
Applicants may submit one entry. The submission medium can be in the form of an essay (400 word limit), social media campaign (minimum 5 draft posts – do not post these to social media), video (maximum length 90 seconds), photo essay (minimum 5 photos, with accompanying brief text), collage, or other original artistic piece that best allows you to communicate the impact you hope to make in public health.

Awards

Two submissions will be chosen for a $5,000 award each. 

 

Eligibility
First-generation students seeking any graduate degree within the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.

 

Selection Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated based on how clearly they communicate to a lay audience your passion for seeking a degree in public health. 

*Note: Feel free to draw from personal experience, but this is not required and will not factor into the selection of the winning submissions.​

Due Date

Submissions must be received by 4:00 pm on March 24, 2023. Late submissions will not be eligible for consideration.

2) Submissions that can be submitted digitally should be emailed to AJ Scheitler at ajscheitler@ucla.edu

with “Wallace Fellowship Award Submission” in the subject line.
